Freedom for the Spanish demonstrator Alfon Fernandez Ortega
Action outside the Spanish Embassy
Saturday 2 April, 2016
Alfon was arrested while he was leaving his house in the working class neighborhood of Vagieka in Madrid on 14/11/2012. He was heading to a strike protection group in his neighborhood. On that day a general pan-European strike was taking place. His participation in the strike had to do with demands that were being made: no more unemployment, no more anti-labor reforms, no more cut-backs to social welfare, no privatization of health care, education, etc.ql
The Spanish police used their familiar tactic of attempting to plant a rucksack with molotov cocktails on him. It seems that in Spain, as in Greece, this is the method the police use to frame demonstrators. Alfon was kept in custody in spite of the fact that his fingerprints were not found on the rucksack. He was kept in prison for 56 days, in a special isolation unit (FIES), and was released on 9/1/2013 owing to international solidarity and protests that took place in Vagiekas, in Madrid and in many other Spanish cities as well as in other countries. The public prosecutor charged him with the possession of explosives and requested a sentence of 5 years imprisonment.ql

Repression in Spain has increased to a scandalous extent, with unprecedented violations of civil rights and freedom. The Spanish state penalizes any form of social action excessively and exhaustively. Hundreds of people are threatened with prison sentences on account of their participation in labor, political and trade union struggles.

qlThe terrorizing of social and labor struggles that is being experienced in Spain is not unfamiliar in Greece. The assault against civil rights and freedom is the option common to employers and rulers in every country when working people and the oppressed rise up and make demands.qlOn 25/11/2014, the trial took place, during which the police frame-up against Alfon was revealed. In a trial full of contradictions and without any evidence that could prove Alfon’s guilt, the interrogation essentially focused on questions relating to his ideology and personal life. In the end, 23 year-old Alfon was sentenced to 4 years in prison.qlThis decision was a warning to all those who struggle against the terrifying conditions that society is facing. It was used as a warning to all those who dare to rise up, refusing to conform to the intensifying conditions of slavery that working people are being submitted to. The state, through the mass media of “communication” present Alfon as a common criminal. Using lies and the falsification of information, they aim to justify the police frame-up and attempt to make people forget that Alfon was a demonstrator who, along with other fellow-citizens, was claiming the right public health and education, was standing up against the government’s anti-labor measures and against the cut-backs in social services; he was struggling for the rights of all of the working class.qlCAPITALISTS ARE THE TERRORISTS
